Exercise Schemes

Facts: 70% of men and 80% of women are sedentary.  Over 1/3rd of CHD deaths are estimated to be contributable to physical inactivity.   Mortality rates for inactive men are double those of active men.

 Notes on Contraindications to Exercise

►Unstable Angina
►Resting systolic BP>180mmHg or resting diastolic BP>100mmHg
►Ventricular or Aortic Aneurysm
►Uncontrolled tachycardia>100bpm at rest
►Unstable or acute heart failure
►Poorly controlled arrythmia
►A CVD patient who has not had a recent negative ECG stress test or recent satisfactory attendance at a cardiac rehab programme
►Recent evidence of a sudden deterioration of symptoms from any cardiovascular or respiratory condition
►If important medication has been left at home eg GTN spray/Ventolin
►Diabetic considerations: poorly controlled diabetes (poor blood sugar controls), the existence of advanced complications, recent injection of insulin or a considerable time delay since last meal, has not brought sugar/carbohydrate with them
►Febrile illness (temporary)
